Lagos Deputy Governor Backs New National Curriculum with ICT Investment

The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has reassured stakeholders that Lagos is fully prepared to implement the federal government’s newly revised school curriculum.

Hamzat made this known on Friday during the unveiling of a solar-powered Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre donated to his alma mater, Odo Abore Primary School, Mushin, a ceremony that also marked his 61st birthday.

Lagos Leads in Education and ICT

Speaking at the event, Hamzat highlighted Lagos State’s leadership in innovation and ICT-driven education.

“We are the first state that made ICT examinable subjects in this country. We have always been leading. It’s not a question of how prepared we are, we are already prepared. It’s just for us to galvanise other parts of the country so that we can speed up the process,” he said.

Hamzat explained that the ICT centre donation was designed to ensure every child has access to digital literacy and future-ready skills.

“Every child today must be computer literate. Bringing ICT to their school makes it easier for them to achieve that. We also have a team in place to manage the facility, handle maintenance, and replace equipment when needed.”

Stakeholders Applaud the ICT Centre Initiative

Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Shitu Akeem, praised the project, stressing that it aligned with the state’s THEME+ Agenda on education and technology.

“With this ICT centre, our pupils can now compete globally. We are moving away from the old ways of learning and embracing 21st-century methods,” Akeem said.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Odiolowo Ojuwoye LCDA, Seyi Jakande, thanked the Deputy Governor, describing the centre as a transformative investment that will positively impact pupils. He further urged Hamzat to replicate the initiative in other schools within the district.

Federal Government’s Revised Curriculum

The donation comes as the federal government prepares to roll out its revised national curriculum for basic, secondary, and technical education in the 2025/2026 academic session.

According to the Ministry of Education, the updated curriculum is designed to:

  • Reduce content overload.
  • Foster patriotic and socially responsible citizens.
  • Equip pupils with 21st-century skills.

The reforms were introduced under the leadership of Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, and form part of ongoing policies to modernise Nigeria’s education system.

Key Takeaway

With the unveiling of a solar-powered ICT centre in Mushin, Lagos once again positions itself as a frontrunner in education technology adoption, showing readiness to implement the federal government’s new curriculum and prepare pupils for the digital age.
