Nigeria Takes Bold Step Toward Digital Literacy with Translated Data Protection Act

Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in digital inclusion and privacy awareness with the translation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) into Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. The initiative, led by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) in partnership with Meta Inc., aims to make data protection knowledge accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of language or literacy level.

This landmark effort underscores Nigeria’s growing commitment to digital literacy, citizen empowerment, and inclusive governance in the era of data-driven transformation.

Making Data Protection Accessible to All

Speaking at the unveiling of the Yoruba version of the Act in Ikeja, Lagos, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, expressed gratitude to Hon. Akeem Olalekan Dauda, Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, for supporting the Commission’s community outreach.

Dr. Olatunji also commended Meta for its partnership, describing the project as a pivotal step toward inclusivity and comprehension of citizens’ data rights and responsibilities.

“This translation project reflects NDPC’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and public awareness,” Dr. Olatunji said. “It empowers individuals to understand how their personal information is collected, used, and protected.”

He emphasised that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises digital empowerment, innovation, and youth inclusion within Nigeria’s growing data protection ecosystem.

Cultural Leadership and Community Involvement

The unveiling ceremony, held under the patronage of His Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom (Epe Division), brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including local government officials, youth representatives, religious leaders, corps members, and market women.

Their participation reflected strong community engagement and shared recognition of the importance of data privacy in today’s interconnected world.

Royal dignitaries in attendance included the Olu of Iwaya-Yaba Kingdom, Oba Suleiman Owolabi Ogun-Oloko, and the Olofin of Isheri and Adimula of Awori Kingdoms, Oba (Engr.) Sulaimon Adekunle Bamgbade, both of whom praised the NDPC’s efforts in ensuring citizens can understand and apply the principles of the NDP Act in their daily lives.

Promoting Digital Literacy and Trust

By translating the NDP Act into Nigeria’s three major languages, the NDPC is advancing digital literacy, citizen inclusion, and trust in the nation’s data protection framework. The initiative ensures that every Nigerian, regardless of linguistic background, can participate meaningfully in the country’s digital transformation journey.

The project also supports Nigeria’s broader goal of strengthening data governance, fostering a culture of privacy compliance, and ensuring that digital rights are respected and upheld across all sectors.

A Landmark for Digital Inclusion in Nigeria

The translation of the Nigerian Data Protection Act represents more than just accessibility, it marks a foundational step toward building a data-conscious society where citizens understand their rights and responsibilities in the digital space.

As Nigeria continues to evolve into a knowledge-based economy, such initiatives will play a key role in empowering communities, building trust in digital systems, and ensuring that no one is left behind in the nation’s quest for digital progress.
