MTN Group Celebrates 30 Years of Connecting Africa, Reaching 300 Million Customers Across Its Markets
MTN Group has achieved a major milestone in its mission to connect Africa, announcing that it now serves over 300 million customers across its markets. The announcement came during MTN’s annual Ambassadors Appreciation Dinner, held on Wednesday, which brought together African diplomats, public sector leaders, and MTN executives to celebrate 30 years of innovation, partnership, and progress in Africa’s digital transformation journey.
A Milestone for Ambition 2025
The achievement marks a defining moment in MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy — an initiative aimed at positioning the company as a leading digital solutions provider and accelerating Africa’s digital inclusion.
“The time is now for Africa to take charge of its own socioeconomic progress. We need to look within for solutions and to develop our own communities.”
– Ralph Mupita, Group President and CEO, MTN
Mupita commended the efforts of MTN employees, partners, and stakeholders across Africa for delivering measurable impact through grassroots innovation and sustained community engagement, even amid global economic challenges.
Recognising Impact Through Y’ello Care
The evening also celebrated the 2025 edition of MTN’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign, themed “Connecting at the Roots: Connecting communities through the use of digital tools.”
This annual initiative mobilised thousands of MTN employees across Africa to develop and deploy digital solutions that enhance access to education, financial inclusion, and essential public services in underserved communities.
“Y’ello Care embodies our belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life. Progress is ultimately built through people – our ideas, commitment and compassion.”
– Nompilo Morafo, Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, MTN
Several MTN markets were recognised for outstanding community-driven projects that leveraged technology for social impact:
