GSMA Launches ‘Open Telco AI’ to Fix Telecoms’ 84% Automation Gap

BARCELONA – The GSM Association (GSMA) has officially pulled back the curtain on Open Telco AI, a massive global offensive designed to bridge the gap between “general” artificial intelligence and the high-stakes world of telecommunications.

Unveiled on Monday at MWC26, the initiative establishes a collaborative ecosystem where network operators, hardware vendors, and AI developers can share data, compute power, and specialized tools to build AI that actually understands a cell tower as well as it understands a chat prompt.

The “Frontier” Problem

While platforms like ChatGPT have taken the world by storm, the GSMA warns that these “frontier models” are currently failing the telecom industry. The association revealed a startling statistic: only 16% of generative AI deployments in the sector are currently being applied to network operations.

General AI models often struggle with:

  • Interpreting complex network data.

  • Navigating dense technical standards documentation.

  • Managing real-time, automated network repairs.

A Specialized Hub for the Industry

To solve this, the GSMA has launched a dedicated portal at GSMA.com/open-telco-ai. The hub serves as a repository for telecom-specific open models and data, allowing for the rigorous testing required in a highly regulated industry. Progress will be tracked via a new Telco Capability Index, measuring how well models perform on specialized industry tasks.

“Today’s AI models still fall short of the complexity, precision, and reliability the telecom industry demands,” said Louis Powell, Director of AI Initiatives at GSMA. “Open Telco AI provides a shared foundation to close this gap—an approach other regulated sectors, such as finance and healthcare, can follow.”

Why It Matters: Moving from Demos to Real Value

As 5G networks become more complex, manual management is becoming nearly impossible. Philip Guido, Executive Vice President and CCO of AMD, highlighted that telecom networks are among the “most demanding” environments for AI. “Moving from demos to telco-grade performance requires an open foundation,” he noted.

Andy Markus, Chief Data and AI Officer at AT&T, added that the initiative is already helping build the datasets and evaluation frameworks needed to reduce operational friction and create new value for customers.

Community & Competitions

The initiative isn’t just about code; it’s about people. Community programs are bringing together researchers and operators to solve real-world problems. This was highlighted by the AI Telco Troubleshooting Challenge, which saw over 1,000 participants compete to solve network issues using AI. Winners are set to be crowned during the Barcelona event.
