Apple has officially launched the iOS 18.5 update, bringing several important enhancements and over 30 critical security patches to compatible iPhones. While this isn’t a massive, feature-heavy update, it’s essential for users to look to protect their data and improve device performance.
Key Features in iOS 18.5
One of the standout additions in iOS 18.5 is an update to Screen Time. Parents will now receive alerts if their child bypasses Screen Time restrictions by entering a passcode, strengthening parental control features on iPhones.
Another major change is the expansion of satellite services to more devices. iPhone 13 users can now access carrier-based satellite connectivity, such as T-Mobile’s Starlink partnership, which was previously unavailable on this model.
Apple has also refined the Mail app interface, making common controls easier to access. In addition, the Settings app now displays AppleCare+ details more prominently, and a new Pride Harmony wallpaper is available as part of Apple’s support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Over 30 Security Fixes You Shouldn’t Ignore
Perhaps the most important part of the iOS 18.5 update is the inclusion of more than 30 security updates designed to protect users from data breaches and cyberattacks. Notable patches include:
- Fixes for bugs allowing physical access to Notes on the Lock Screen.
- A vulnerability that allowed eavesdropping on deleted call recordings.
- A FaceTime bug that occasionally failed to mute properly.
- Spotlight search improvements to prevent deleted app data from appearing.
- Strengthened Bluetooth and iCloud document sharing protections.
- Multiple fixes for WebKit, Core Graphics, and denial-of-service vulnerabilities.
For users with the iPhone 16e, iOS 18.5 includes the first fix for Apple’s C1 modem chip, preventing wireless carriers from being exploited to intercept network traffic. Fortunately, none of these vulnerabilities appear to have been exploited in the wild, unlike previous issues addressed in iOS 18.3.2 and iOS 18.4.1. Still, it’s highly recommended to install iOS 18.5 immediately to avoid potential threats.
Updates for macOS and iPadOS
In addition to iOS 18.5, Apple has rolled out security updates for older devices, including macOS 13.7.6, macOS 14.7.6, and iPadOS 17.7.7. These are meant for users who haven’t transitioned to the latest OS due to hardware limitations or business IT restrictions.
