WhatsApp Ends Support for Older iPhones and Android Phones from June 1, 2025
Meta-owned WhatsApp has officially ended support for dozens of older smartphones, effective June 1, 2025. This update impacts users who still rely on legacy iPhones and early Android models, marking a significant push toward modern device and OS adoption.
According to WhatsApp, the app now requires at least iOS 15.1 or Android 5.0 to function. Users on older devices will no longer be able to send or receive messages, make calls, or access chat backups through the platform.
Originally scheduled for May 5, 2025, the change was delayed to June 1 to give users more time to upgrade their devices.

Why Is WhatsApp Ending Support for These Devices?
WhatsApp regularly phases out older operating systems and hardware that no longer meet performance or security requirements. This change ensures that:
- Users benefit from faster, more secure messaging
- The app remains compatible with new features and updates
- Meta can maintain end-to-end encryption and bug fixes more effectively
Devices running outdated OS versions are more vulnerable to security breaches and no longer receive manufacturer updates, making them incompatible with modern app architecture.
What You Should Do If Your Phone Is on the List
If your device is on this list, you will need to
- Backup your WhatsApp chats (via Google Drive or iCloud)
- Upgrade to a device running iOS 15.1 or later or Android 5.0 and above
- Reinstall WhatsApp on the new phone and restore your backup
Failure to upgrade will mean complete loss of access to the platform’s features and your chat history.
