Apple to Adopt All-Screen iPhone Design in Two Phases: First Seamless Model May Launch in 2027
Apple is reportedly closer than ever to delivering its long-awaited all-screen iPhone, according to recent reports by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and The Information’s Wayne Ma. The transformation will reportedly take place over two key stages, beginning as early as 2025, and culminating in a 20th-anniversary iPhone model in 2027 that could feature a truly edge-to-edge, cutout-free screen.
Stage 1 (2025): Smaller Dynamic Island on iPhone 17
According to Gurman, Apple plans to shrink the Dynamic Island on next year’s iPhone 17 lineup. This would mark another step forward in Apple’s journey toward eliminating visible display cutouts entirely.
This move builds upon Apple’s notch-to-Island transition in the iPhone 14 Pro (2022), further pushing the iPhone toward a more immersive, display-focused aesthetic.
Stage 2 (2027): Seamless All-Screen Design for the 20th Anniversary iPhone
Gurman also reports that Apple is aiming to launch a radically redesigned iPhone in 2027—its 20th-anniversary edition. This special model is expected to be the first iPhone to feature:
- Truly edge-to-edge display
- Curved glass edges
- Ultra-slim bezels
- No visible cutouts or notches
- Under-screen Face ID and front camera
This would mark a historic design milestone for Apple, finally realizing a vision it has been inching toward since the iPhone X debuted in 2017.
Under-Screen Face ID Coming to iPhone 18 Pro
Supporting this roadmap, The Information’s Wayne Ma previously revealed that the iPhone 18 Pro models (expected in 2026) will feature under-screen Face ID. Ma noted that the devices will replace the current pill-shaped Dynamic Island with only a small hole for the front camera.
This creates a slight inconsistency with Gurman’s claim that the Dynamic Island will simply shrink in 2025—but both reports agree that a major reduction in display obstructions is imminent, leading up to a full-screen model by 2027.
The Gradual Evolution Toward a Full-Screen iPhone
Apple’s journey to a full-screen iPhone has been slow but deliberate:
- 2017 (iPhone X): Removed Touch ID, introduced Face ID and the notch
- 2022 (iPhone 14 Pro): Replaced notch with Dynamic Island
- 2025 (iPhone 17, rumored): Smaller Dynamic Island
- 2026 (iPhone 18 Pro, rumored): Under-screen Face ID
- 2027 (iPhone 20th Anniversary): First truly seamless, all-screen iPhone
Final Thoughts
If these reports are accurate, Apple’s first all-screen iPhone is set to arrive in 2027, aligning with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone’s original launch. With under-display Face ID, a hidden front camera, and no bezels or cutouts, the device could mark the biggest leap in iPhone design history.
Until then, iPhone users can expect incremental but significant changes, starting with a more compact Dynamic Island in next year’s model.
