MultiChoice Nigeria Cuts DStv Decoder Price by 50%, Launches ‘We’ve Got You’ Promo to Win Back Subscribers
MultiChoice Nigeria, the country’s leading pay TV provider, has announced a 50% reduction in the price of its DStv decoder, slashing the cost from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000. The move is part of a strategic initiative to recover from a subscriber loss of 1.4 million users between March 2023 and March 2025.
In addition to the price cut, MultiChoice is rolling out a new “We’ve Got You” campaign, which offers a free upgrade to the next DStv package tier for active and returning subscribers who renew their subscriptions in full between June 16 and July 31, 2025.
Free DStv Upgrade to Next Package Tier
The new promotion allows eligible customers to enjoy more channels and premium content without paying extra. According to MultiChoice, subscribers who renew their current DStv packages will be automatically upgraded to the next higher tier during the promo window.
“This means more channels, more shows, and more reasons to tune in every day,” said the company in its official statement.
This offer applies to both active and returning customers, reinforcing the company’s effort to make quality entertainment more accessible in the face of economic challenges.
MultiChoice CEO: Campaign is About Customer Loyalty and Value
John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria, emphasised that the “We Got You” initiative is part of the company’s commitment to delivering value amid tough economic times:
“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day. The campaign is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans,” he said.
The offer includes a wide variety of content across genres, such as movies, kids’ shows, drama, news, and more.
MultiChoice Nigeria Struggles with Subscriber Decline
According to MultiChoice Group’s latest financial report, Nigeria accounted for 77% of the 1.8 million subscriber loss across the company’s Rest of Africa (RoA) operations from 2023 to 2025. The RoA total subscriber base dropped from 9.3 million in 2023 to 7.5 million in 2025.
Contributing factors to the decline included:
- Three separate subscription price increases in 12 months
- April 2023
- November 2023
- May 2024
- High inflation
- Fuel scarcity
- Power grid instability
These economic pressures severely impacted consumer spending and prompted many households to discontinue PayTV subscriptions
A Timely Strategy to Boost Retention and Acquisition
With the decoder price cut and attractive free upgrade offer, MultiChoice Nigeria is making a bold effort to reposition DStv as an affordable, everyday value platform. As consumer wallets remain strained, this move could help the company regain lost ground and rebuild trust among its customer base.
