AI Innovation Centre Bill in Ekiti Passes Second Reading in Senate

The Nigerian Senate has approved the second reading of a bill seeking to establish the Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Communication Technology Solutions Centre in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The proposed centre is designed to promote research, development, and application of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies as part of Nigeria’s broader digital transformation and innovation strategy.

About the Bill

The bill, titled “Act to Establish the Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Communication Technology Solution Centre, Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti State to Promote Research, Development and Application of Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies for National Development and for Related Matters, 2025 (SB 763),” was sponsored by Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu (Ekiti South).

After passing its second reading, the bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, which is expected to present its report within four weeks.

Objectives of the Proposed Centre

According to Senator Adaramodu, the centre will serve as a national hub for AI research, innovation, and capacity development, with focus areas including:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning
  • Robotics and automation
  • Data science and analytics
  • Emerging communication technologies

The senator emphasised that the centre would bridge the gap between academia, government, and the private sector, fostering collaboration to drive Nigeria’s technological advancement.

He noted that the facility would also equip young Nigerians with digital and AI-based skills, supporting employment creation and entrepreneurship in the technology ecosystem.

Strategic Location: Why Omuo-Ekiti

Senator Adaramodu described Omuo-Ekiti as a strategic location for the project, highlighting Ekiti State’s strong educational heritage and reputation for intellectual excellence.

“The establishment of this Centre in Omuo-Ekiti will not only stimulate research and innovation but also catalyse economic growth in the South-West region and across the country,” he stated.

Advancing Nigeria’s Technological Future

The senator further emphasised that the bill represents an important step toward securing Nigeria’s place in the global technological landscape, aligning with the country’s goals for:

  • Youth empowerment and job creation
  • Digital economy expansion
  • Economic diversification through technology

He added that nations ignoring the impact of AI do so “at their own peril,” stressing the need for Nigeria to embrace AI-driven innovation in governance, business, and education.

Outlook

If passed into law, the AI Innovation Centre in Omuo-Ekiti will position Nigeria as a regional leader in artificial intelligence and digital innovation, supporting the government’s commitment to building a knowledge-driven economy.
