All Facebook Videos to Become Reels in Major Meta Update

Meta to Classify All New Facebook Videos as Reels in Platform-Wide Update

In a sweeping update aimed at simplifying video sharing on Facebook, Meta Platforms has announced that all new videos uploaded to Facebook will soon be categorised as Reels, regardless of length or format.

The change reflects Meta’s ongoing efforts to unify its video experiences across Facebook and Instagram while encouraging the use of Reels, its short-form video format designed to compete with TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

“This update makes it easier for people to create, discover, and engage with video content on Facebook,” Meta said in a statement on Tuesday.

What’s Changing with Facebook Videos and Reels

Meta’s update will eliminate format and time restrictions previously associated with Reels, allowing short, long-form, and even live videos to be classified as Reels. Key changes include:

  • All new video uploads will automatically become Reels
  • No more video length limitations
  • Live streams and long-form videos included
  • Access to enhanced creative tools and editing features
  • The Video tab will be renamed the Reels tab

Previously uploaded videos will remain in their original format and classification. Only new content uploaded after the rollout will be affected.

Audience Settings and Privacy Controls

As part of the transition, Meta will prompt users to review and confirm their audience settings, particularly if their Reels and feed posts have different privacy preferences. This ensures consistent visibility across content types while maintaining user control.

Global Rollout Coming Soon

The update will be gradually rolled out worldwide to both personal profiles and business pages over the coming months, according to Meta. The change aims to:

  •  Simplify video publishing for creators
  •  Streamline the content discovery experience
  • Boost visibility and engagement for video content

Why Meta Is Pushing Reels as the Default Format

Meta’s move to unify video under the Reels umbrella is part of a broader strategy to increase video engagement, particularly among younger users. Reels have become a central part of Facebook and Instagram’s video strategy, driving billions of plays daily.

By merging all video types into Reels, Facebook simplifies content creation, leverages Reels’ algorithmic distribution, and encourages users to explore more video content on the platform.

Key Takeaways:

  • Meta will classify all new Facebook videos as Reels, short or long.
  • The change includes live and prerecorded videos with no time limits.
  • Users will gain access to new creative tools and be asked to confirm privacy settings.
  • The Video tab will be rebranded as the Reels tab.
  • Meta will roll out the update globally in phases over the coming months.
