Apple Tops Chinese Smartphone Market in May, iPhone Sales Surge Globally — Counterpoint Research

Apple Reclaims Top Spot in China’s Smartphone Market in May 2025

Apple’s iPhone sales surged to the top of the Chinese smartphone market in May 2025, according to new data from Counterpoint Research. This marks the tech giant’s strongest two-month global sales performance since the COVID-19 pandemic, with year-over-year growth hitting 15% in April and May combined.

iPhone Sales Surge Driven by Growth in China and U.S.

The resurgence in iPhone sales was primarily powered by Apple’s two biggest markets: China and the United States. Counterpoint’s preliminary findings indicate a return to growth in both countries, helping Apple gain significant ground in global smartphone shipments.

“Q2 iPhone performance looks promising at the moment, but as always, swings either way are dictated by two markets – the U.S. and China,”

Global Markets Show Strong iPhone Momentum

Beyond China and the U.S., Apple also experienced double-digit iPhone sales growth in:

  • Japan
  • India
  • Middle Eastern markets

Apple’s broader global momentum underscores its ability to navigate tariffs and economic headwinds, thanks in part to strategic pricing and aggressive discounts.

iPhone Sales Boosted by Chinese Market Discounts

In China, where local brands like Huawei and Xiaomi pose intense competition, Apple has ramped up promotional efforts to stay ahead. In May 2025, Chinese e-commerce platforms offered up to 2,530 yuan ($351) off Apple’s latest iPhone 16 series, a move that likely fueled the brand’s top ranking.

According to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), April shipments of foreign-branded smartphones in China climbed to 3.52 million units, up slightly from 3.50 million in April 2024.

iPhone Sales Outlook for Q2 2025

While the full Q2 results are yet to be finalised, Counterpoint’s early estimates suggest that Apple’s Q2 iPhone sales could outperform expectations, especially if demand in China and the U.S. remains steady.

Apple’s focused pricing strategy, combined with increased demand in emerging markets, is positioning the company for continued dominance in the premium smartphone space.
