Chief Etiebet is best known for his pioneering work in computing and information technology. As the founder of Data Sciences Nigeria Limited, established in 1979, he introduced cutting-edge IT solutions to Nigeria at a time when technology was still a novelty in the region.
In 1992, Data Sciences launched the Obodex PC, the first Nigerian-branded personal computer, assembled locally. The Obodex PC became a landmark in Nigeria’s tech history, gaining widespread adoption across industries, including oil and gas, banking, telecommunications, and government institutions.
The company’s partnerships with global tech leaders, such as Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), positioned it as a dominant player in the IT space. Today, Data Sciences stands as a testament to Etiebet’s visionary leadership and its role in shaping Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

Etiebet’s journey into technology began with a strong academic foundation. He earned a B.Sc. in Petroleum Technology and an M.Sc. in Applied Geophysics in the 1960s and 1970s. Etiebet’s influence extended beyond business. In 1977, he co-founded the Computer Association of Nigeria (COAN) alongside two university professors. COAN, inaugurated in 1978, later evolved into the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), the premier professional body for IT practitioners in the country.
Through his efforts, the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) was established by law, ensuring standards for IT practice in Nigeria. Etiebet’s dedication earned him life fellowships with both the NCS and CPN, cementing his legacy as an ICT activist.
