Facebook to Delete Old Live Videos: Users Get 90 Days to Save Content

Facebook has begun removing old live videos from its platform, following a significant policy update announced by the parent company, Meta. The new rule, effective from February 19, 2025, automatically deletes live broadcasts 30 days after posting, drastically changing how long users can store live content.

Why Facebook Is Deleting Old Live Videos

According to Meta, the policy aligns with industry standards and reflects the fact that most live video views occur within the first few weeks after streaming. “We’re updating how long live videos can be stored on Facebook to provide the most up-to-date live video experiences,” Meta stated in a blog post.

Previously, live videos could be stored indefinitely. However, under the new system, even older archived broadcasts are now being removed in phases, with users receiving email and in-app notifications.

What Facebook Users Need to Know

  • Automatic Deletion: All live videos are deleted 30 days after posting.
  • Phased Rollout: The deletion of older videos is happening gradually.
  • 90-Day Warning: Affected users will have 90 days from the date of notification to act.

How to Save Your Old Live Videos

Meta has introduced several options for users who want to preserve their live content

  1. Download Individual Videos:
    • Go to your Facebook profile, page, or Meta Business Suite.
    • Select and download the live video.
  2. Bulk Download via Activity Log:
    • Open Activity Log → Select “Your Live Videos” → Pick date range → Click “Create File.”
  3. Transfer to Cloud Storage:
    • Send videos to platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox.
  4. Convert to Reels:
    • Clip shorter segments and post them as reels to keep them permanently on your profile.
One-Time Six-Month Deletion Extension

Meta is offering a one-time 6-month postponement. To activate it:

  • Tap the deletion notification.
  • Select Postpone the deletion.”
  • Confirm the request.

This grace period gives users additional time to manage and preserve their favourite live content. The new Facebook live video deletion policy signals a major shift in how the platform manages content longevity. With a 30-day auto-deletion window now in place, users should act quickly to save valuable live content before it disappears.
