FG Launches Digital Portal for Nigerian Teachers’ Registration and Certification

FG Unveils Teachers’ Digital Portal

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched a digital portal for teachers’ registration, certification, and professional development, marking a significant milestone in the country’s education reforms.

The unveiling, held in Abuja, was led by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who described the initiative as a step towards repositioning Nigeria’s education sector through technology, accountability, and professionalisation.

Features of the Teachers’ Digital Portal

Developed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), the portal is designed as a comprehensive platform to streamline teacher management nationwide. Key features include:

  • Seamless teacher registration, licensing, and renewal
  • Examination scheduling for Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE)
  • Tracking professional development and career progression
  • A national teacher performance database

According to Dr. Alausa, the system will improve transparency while strengthening teacher accountability and global alignment.

Teacher Reforms in Nigeria

The new platform is part of broader reforms under the Strategic Vision for Nigerian Teachers, anchored on:

  • Professionalisation of teaching
  • Digitalisation of teacher data and certification
  • Accountability and equity in the education sector
  • Alignment with global best practices

The government also announced the rollout of a Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework, making it mandatory for teachers to undergo ethical clearance. This framework will also apply to private school teachers, with the digital portal providing secure verification tools.

“This is not punitive; it is protective. It is about safeguarding our children and upholding the moral integrity of our classrooms,” – Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education.

TRCN’s New Measures

TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, said the digital portal is part of her 100-day action plan to modernise teacher operations in Nigeria.

With the platform, teachers can:

  • Register and renew licences online
  • Access examination results
  • Print certificates without visiting TRCN state offices

She further announced that TRCN has streamlined its PQE from 23 subjects to five core areas:

  1. Foundational mathematics
  2. Literacy
  3. Digital literacy
  4. Safeguarding
  5. Pedagogy

In addition, TRCN plans to roll out an AI-powered lesson plan generator by October, designed to provide contextualised instructional materials for Nigerian classrooms.

According to Soyombo, these reforms will lead to a 50% increase in TRCN-certified teachers, stronger child protection policies, and improved compliance with global teaching benchmarks.

Building the Platform

The platform was developed by TeckPlus Digital Solutions, led by CEO Dr. Patrick Adeleye, who explained that the project began 20 months ago to fix Nigeria’s longstanding teacher data management gaps.

“Before now, we did not have accurate figures on the number of teachers in Nigeria, how many were certified, or even qualified to be in the classroom. This affected the overall learning outcome.” – Dr. Adeleye.

The portal now integrates with the Education Management Information System (EMIS), ensuring reliable national data to guide policy decisions.

Stakeholder Reactions

  • The British Council’s Director of Programmes, Chikodi Onyemerela, described the platform as a milestone for Nigeria’s education system.
  • Ian Attfield, Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, said the system would boost teacher motivation and data-driven decision-making.
  • Mohammed Isa, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, urged for inclusivity. He called for accessibility tools such as screen readers, sign language support, and digital braille in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Final Thoughts

The launch of the teachers’ digital portal marks a turning point for Nigeria’s education sector. By combining technology with teacher professionalisation, the Federal Government is addressing long-standing challenges in teacher certification, accountability, and data management.

As reforms deepen, this initiative is expected to improve teacher motivation, safeguard children, and elevate Nigeria’s education system to global standards.
