The Federal Government has announced plans to strengthen Nigeria’s cyber resilience with the proposed establishment of a National Cybersecurity Coordination Council, in a move aimed at tightening data protection and improving response to digital threats.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed the initiative in a statement, highlighting the government’s push for stronger collaboration among regulators, private sector players, and other key stakeholders in the digital ecosystem.
According to Tijani, the proposed council will serve as a central platform to harmonise national cybersecurity efforts, enhance threat detection and response, and boost the resilience of both public and private sector systems.
“Cybersecurity is a shared national responsibility. Protecting Nigeria’s digital economy requires strong partnerships, trusted collaboration and collective vigilance across government, industry and civil society,” the minister said.
Push for stronger coordination
The move comes amid intensified regulatory scrutiny by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), which is currently reviewing compliance levels across various sectors as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and trust in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy.
Industry experts say the proposed council could bridge long-standing coordination gaps between regulatory bodies, security agencies, and private organisations—especially as digital adoption accelerates in sectors such as banking, telecommunications, and government services.
