BBM, Goodie Goodie, Share A Coke – Things Millennials Got to Experience That Gen Zs Haven’t, Yet

Every generation has its golden era, a time when trends, tech, and pop culture defined what it meant to be cool. For Gen Z, it’s the age of AI filters, TikTok dances, and soft life aesthetics. But for millennials, it was an era of pure chaos, laughter, and cultural resets, the kind that makes you say, “Back then, things were different.”

From BBM pings, indestructible Nokia phones, legacy Nollywood, birthday party games, and Goodie Goodie chocolates, to the unforgettable “Share a Coke” campaign, the millennial experience was unmatched.

Here’s a trip down memory lane, a look at what millennials got to live through that Gen Zs missed out on (for now).

1. The BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) Era

Before WhatsApp, Telegram, or iMessage, there was BBM, the ultimate social app of the 2000s. Having a BlackBerry wasn’t just about chatting; it was a status symbol.

Your BBM pin was your identity, your DP (display picture) was your mood board, and your Broadcast Messages were the original “group chats.” And who can forget that iconic PING!!!,  the one alert that could both excite and annoy you instantly.

The BBM era wasn’t just about communication; it was culture. It was where friendships, gossip, and “subtle toasters” thrived before blue ticks and online statuses became a thing.

2. Indestructible Phones, Snake & Bounce

Before touchscreens and fast chargers, there were Nokia phones, devices so durable they could survive a drop, a flood, and maybe even an apocalypse.

These phones had no fancy screens, but they had Snake and Bounce, two of the most addictive mobile games ever. Memory cards got full easily, batteries popped out during calls, and SIM cards lived nine lives.

And yet, they worked. Every single time. Millennials didn’t need power banks; they had phones that could go three days on a single charge.

3. Birthday Parties and the Reign of Goodie Goodie

Millennial birthday parties were pure joy, no “party themes,” just cake, dance competitions, and Goodie Goodie chocolate as the ultimate prize.

You danced your heart out not for clout, but to win a notebook, pencil case, or a pack of sweets. Kids today have LED lights and cotton candy machines; back then, we had DJ parents, plastic chairs, and bottles of Fanta. And that was enough.

4. The ‘Share a Coke’ Moment

When Coca-Cola launched its Share a Coke” campaign, finding a bottle with your name on it was like winning the lottery.

People searched supermarkets and kiosks just to find “Tolu,” “Emeka,” or “Aisha.” If you found your crush’s name, it was a sign from the universe. And if your name wasn’t common enough to make the list, you felt personally attacked.

It was simple marketing magic — and millennials were here for it.
