Global Tech Guard: Nigeria Joins 60 Nations in Major Crackdown on AI Deepfakes

2 minutes read

ABUJA – In a decisive move to protect digital frontiers, Nigeria has teamed up with over 60 global data protection authorities to launch a coordinated offensive against the rising tide of AI-generated deepfakes and non-consensual digital content.

The international coalition, operating under the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA), has endorsed a rigorous new set of standards designed to curb the misuse of artificial intelligence. This joint action comes as “hyper-realistic” AI tools increasingly threaten individual privacy, particularly targeting children and vulnerable populations.

The Fight Against Non-Consensual Content

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) revealed on Wednesday that the initiative focuses on the growing risks of AI tools capable of synthesizing the likeness of identifiable individuals without their permission.

Babatunde Bamigboye, the NDPC’s Head of Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations, emphasized that these technologies are being weaponized to produce defamatory materials and non-consensual imagery. The new standards demand that tech organizations:

  • Implement Robust Safeguards: Introduce technical barriers to prevent harmful content generation.

  • Radical Transparency: Clearly disclose when AI is being used.

  • Swift Removal Mechanisms: Provide users with accessible tools to take down harmful AI-generated content.

Nigeria’s National AI Strategy

This global endorsement aligns with Nigeria’s internal tech roadmap. The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has already pioneered a National AI Strategy to ensure the country’s adoption of emerging tech is both innovative and ethical.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the NDPC, warned that the commission will not be a silent observer. He confirmed that the Nigeria Data Protection Act will be leveraged to conduct compliance audits on organizations deploying AI within the country.

Why This Matters Now

With the rapid evolution of Generative AI, the line between reality and fabrication has blurred. By joining this 60-nation bloc, Nigeria ensures that its citizens are protected by international best practices, preventing the country from becoming a “dark spot” for unregulated AI experimentation.

Key Entity Role in AI Regulation
GPA Coordinating international enforcement across 60+ countries.
NDPC Conducting compliance audits under the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
Ministry of Communications Driving the National AI Strategy for ethical adoption.

The NDPC reiterated that while it supports innovation and the growth of the digital economy, the privacy rights of Nigerians remain non-negotiable.
