Google Launches “Build with AI” Programme to Train 1,000 Nigerian Developers in Generative AI

Google has announced the launch of Build with AI, a new initiative aimed at training 1,000 Nigerian developers in generative artificial intelligence (AI) skills. The programme seeks to empower local tech talent to create innovative, locally relevant, and globally competitive solutions.

Partnership with GOMYCODE to Boost AI Skills in Nigeria

The Build with AI programme is being delivered in collaboration with GOMYCODE, a technology training company dedicated to equipping Africans with in-demand digital skills.

According to John Kimani, Head of Developer Ecosystem for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, this initiative is a crucial step in accelerating Nigeria’s role in the global AI economy.

“We are witnessing a technological renaissance in Nigeria, driven by a vibrant community of developers eager to solve local challenges. Our collaboration with GOMYCODE is about more than just training — it’s about empowering this community with the expertise they need to build the future,” Kimani said.

Closing the AI Skills Gap

Kimani explained that the training comes at a pivotal time, as industries across Nigeria and Africa increasingly adopt technology to address pressing challenges and drive economic growth.

Participants will gain access to advanced AI tools such as Google Gemini and a curriculum guided by Google experts. The programme will focus on building solutions in key sectors:

  • Fintech
  • Healthtech
  • Agritech

This targeted approach aims to position Nigerian developers at the forefront of Africa’s digital transformation.

Hands-On, Practical AI Training

The 11-week programme will be delivered through GOMYCODE’s hacker spaces, blending in-person teaching with mentored, hands-on lab work.

“This approach ensures the training is both accessible and practical, allowing developers to immediately apply their skills to real-world projects,” Kimani added.

Babatunde Olaifa, Country Director for GOMYCODE, highlighted that the company would provide the necessary infrastructure and local expertise to help Nigerian tech talent excel.

“We are creating an environment where innovation can thrive, and we are incredibly excited to see the AI-powered solutions that will emerge from this programme,” Olaifa said.

Applications Now Open

The programme is open to developers across Nigeria, with applications now being accepted. It will conclude with a demo day, where top participants will present their AI-powered solutions to Google and industry leaders.
