Google Partnership with Volvo Cars to Accelerate Android Automotive Development

Google and Volvo Cars have announced a deepened strategic partnership to fast-track the development of Android-based automotive software. As the lead development partner for Android Automotive, Volvo will now gain early access to new software versions, giving its vehicles a competitive edge over other automakers that are typically behind in software updates.

According to Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo’s global head of software engineering, this collaboration will allow the company to deliver new features and in-car experiences faster than ever before. “This gives us a real advantage in building fantastic customer experiences,” he told Reuters.

Traditionally, the auto industry trails mobile technology by nearly two Android versions, limiting the functionality of in-car systems compared to smartphones. Currently, Volvo vehicles run on Android 13, but at Google I/O 2025, the carmaker unveiled its EX90 electric SUV running Android 15, the latest version of Google’s operating system. This update will be included in production models launching later this year, a two-year head start compared to other manufacturers, Bakkenes noted.

The partnership also integrates Google’s Gemini AI model into Volvo vehicles, offering a smarter, more intuitive in-car experience. Drivers will be able to use natural language commands to retrieve information such as destinations from emails or texts, search for recipes, or create a shopping list, all hands-free and AI-powered.

With Google engineers now testing software directly in Volvo vehicles, the integration between mobile and automotive platforms is expected to become seamless and human-centric, offering a next-level driving experience.
