Google has released its 2025 Year in Search report, revealing the keywords and topics that dominated online searches in Nigeria throughout the year. Among the biggest trends were “iPhone 17,” “Straw Movie,” and Senator Natasha Akpoti, reflecting the country’s strong interest in technology, entertainment, and political developments.
Google’s Year in Search, published annually, highlights the top trending topics and offers insights into the questions, curiosities, and global moments that shaped online behaviour. Categories tracked include news, personalities, movies, music, TV series, and general search queries.
AI-Powered Search Expands User Curiosity
Simon Rogers, Data Editor of Google Trends, noted that the integration of artificial intelligence into Google Search significantly changed the way people asked questions in 2025. Queries began to sound more conversational, as though users were interacting with a friend.
According to him:
“Searches starting with ‘Tell me about…’ increased by 70% year over year, while ‘How do I…’ queries hit an all-time high with a 25% rise.”
Rogers also highlighted unusual trending questions such as “How do I know if my Labubu is real?”, which surged to the top of specific query categories.
