Interswitch, a leading Nigerian payments company, has announced Google Pay integration on its Interswitch Payment Gateway (IPG), enabling users to make global transactions directly from the Google Wallet app. With this new feature, Nigerian merchants and users can now add their debit and credit card details to Google Wallet, allowing seamless online payments using both local and international cards and creating virtual cards for easy checkout.

Interswitch’s managing director for digital commerce, Muyiwa Asagba, stated that the partnership with Google Pay aligns with the company’s mission to enhance transaction experiences for businesses and their customers. “We are proud to align with Google Pay,” said Asagba. “By integrating Google Pay into our Payment Gateway, we are empowering businesses to reach a global audience while ensuring secure, reliable payments.”

The integration prioritizes security, using tokens to prevent fraud and offering Google Wallet’s “Find My Device” feature to protect users’ financial information in case of device loss. Google Wallet’s Jenny Cheng highlighted that this service, available across 70 countries, lets users pay with confidence using their Android or Wear OS devices.

Interswitch’s integration follows similar moves by other African fintechs like Flutterwave and Nala, who introduced Google Pay to support cross-border payments, further underscoring the growing adoption of digital wallets across the continent.
