The Lagos State Government has entered into a partnership with MTN Nigeria to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge into a modern and regulated transport hub, to be known as Y’ELLO Bus Park upon completion.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday by Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, who said the project would transform the previously degraded space into a secure, organised, and community-focused facility.
Transforming a Degraded Space
According to Wahab, the redevelopment will convert the Obalende under-bridge from a notorious and underutilised area into a well-structured transport hub designed to improve safety, order, and environmental standards.
“This redevelopment will convert what was once a notorious and degraded space into a functional, secure, and community-centred facility,” the Commissioner said in a post on X.
The project aligns with the Lagos State Government’s ongoing clean-sweep strategy, which focuses on reclaiming public spaces, enhancing security, upgrading infrastructure, and promoting a cleaner urban environment.
Key Features of the Y’ELLO Bus Park
Wahab revealed that the new bus park will be designed with a strong emphasis on safety, public health, and aesthetics.
Key features include:
- Solar-powered lighting to improve visibility at night and eliminate dark spots
- CCTV surveillance cameras to monitor activities, deter crime, and enhance security across the Obalende axis
The Commissioner noted that the CCTV infrastructure will also be powered by solar energy, ensuring uninterrupted monitoring and protection of lives and property.
Climate-Friendly Infrastructure
In line with Lagos State’s climate and sustainability goals, the project will incorporate solar panels to support long-term energy efficiency and reduce the facility’s carbon footprint.
“In line with our commitment to climate responsibility, the project includes the installation of solar panels to support long-term energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint,” Wahab said.
Transport, Waste Management, and Public Amenities
Beyond serving as a transport terminal, the Y’ELLO Bus Park will also house:
- A regulated transport terminal to organise commuter movement
- A recycling drop-off station to discourage illegal waste disposal
- A road camp for Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers and security agencies
The facility will also include over 60 public toilet fixtures, kiosks, and other essential amenities to serve commuters and residents in the area.
Sustainable Environmental Features
Additional sustainability-focused infrastructure at the bus park will include:
- A biodigester system for managing wastewater generated within the facility
- Tree planting to improve air quality and enhance the visual appeal of the environment
Reclaiming Public Spaces
Wahab said the project reflects the Lagos State Government’s determination to reclaim public spaces from criminal and thuggery-related activities, while creating facilities that are safe, functional, and sustainable.
According to him, the Y’ELLO Bus Park, once completed, will significantly improve mobility, environmental quality, and public safety for Lagos residents and commuters.
