Liberia Empowers Monrovia Students with Digital Safety and AI Awareness

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has taken a major step in promoting digital literacy and responsible technology use among young people by organising a Mini Summit on “Online Safety and Consumer Protection” for secondary school students across Monrovia.

The event, led by LTA’s Government and Consumer Affairs Department, brought together students from five schools to discuss critical topics in digital safety, artificial intelligence (AI), and ethical technology engagement.

Promoting Online Safety and Responsible Tech Use

The interactive session focused on key areas of digital safety, including online scams, cyberbullying, human trafficking, and AI awareness. Students had the opportunity to share real-life experiences, learn practical strategies for avoiding digital threats, and explore the responsible use of emerging technologies such as AI and ChatGPT.

Panelists encouraged participants to view technology as a positive tool for learning, creativity, and problem-solving rather than a platform for misinformation or harmful behavior.

“Young people must take ownership of their online safety,” said Mr. Lekpele M. Nyamalon, LTA’s Consumer Manager. “By speaking up, supporting one another, and using technology wisely, you can create safer digital spaces for yourselves and your peers.”

Engaging Students Across Monrovia

The Mini Summit featured students from:

  • St. Theresa’s Convent
  • Wells Hairston High School
  • Monrovia Central High School
  • Muslim Congress High School
  • B.W. Harris Episcopal High School

The event served as a platform for collaboration, dialogue, and peer learning, equipping students with the skills to recognise online risks and act responsibly in digital environments.

Building a Digitally Aware Generation

This Monrovia edition follows similar LTA engagements held two months earlier in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, as part of a nationwide outreach campaign. The initiative aims to empower young Liberians with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the digital world safely and ethically.

Through these programs, the Liberia Telecommunications Authority is reaffirming its commitment to:

  • Strengthening consumer protection and online safety.
  • Promoting digital inclusion and awareness.
  • Encouraging the responsible use of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.

“We are shaping a generation of informed, innovative, and responsible digital citizens,” Mr. Nyamalon emphasized.

Driving Digital Transformation Through Education

The LTA’s Mini Summit underscores Liberia’s growing investment in digital education and youth empowerment. By integrating AI awareness and online safety education into community programs, the Authority is helping bridge the digital literacy gap and build a resilient, tech-savvy youth population.

As Liberia continues to expand its digital ecosystem, initiatives like this ensure that young people not only benefit from technology but also understand how to use it responsibly and safely.
