Mauritius to Launch Electronic Travel Authorisation System to Boost Tourism and Modernise Border Control
Mauritius is preparing to roll out an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system aimed at modernising border clearance and improving travel efficiency. The initiative is part of a broader national strategy to strengthen the tourism sector and enhance the country’s global competitiveness.
Speaking during the 50th anniversary celebration of Constance Hotels & Resorts, Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, described the ETA as a key component of the country’s development agenda. Once implemented, the system is expected to redefine entry and exit procedures for travellers.
A Modern Online Pre-Clearance System
The Mauritius ETA will function as an online pre-clearance process that passengers must complete before boarding their flights. Similar systems are already in use in countries such as the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe.
The ETA is expected to:
- Reduce airport wait times
- Simplify entry procedures for both tourists and citizens
- Strengthen border security
- Enhance the overall travel experience
Tourism as the Driving Force
Tourism remains a major pillar of the Mauritian economy, and the ETA initiative aims to support its rapid growth. According to Tourism Analysis, the country welcomed 1.14 million visitors between January and October 2025, a 3.7% increase from the 1.1 million recorded during the same period in 2024.
The report further showed:
- 96% of arrivals were by air
- Nearly 17,000 visitors arrived by sea
The Prime Minister emphasised that modernising the tourism experience is essential to preserving Mauritius’ competitive advantage. This includes upgrading infrastructure, digital connectivity, and regulatory frameworks.
Mauritius’ Growing Appeal as a Travel Destination
Mauritius is renowned for its beaches, natural attractions, and luxury resorts. Top destinations include:
- Le Morne Beach
- Seven Coloured Earth
- Black River Gorges National Park
- Local markets, festivals, and cultural villages
The ETA aligns with ongoing efforts to develop sustainable tourism and maintain high service standards.
What the New ETA Might Include
Though full details of the system are yet to be released, early reports suggest the ETA could:
- Apply to all travellers, including those currently visa-exempt
- Include a digital recognition system to support border digitisation
- Replace or complement existing pre-arrival documentation
The project is still in development, and current entry requirements remain unchanged.
Current Entry Process for Mauritius
For now, visitors must continue with the existing procedures:
- Most nationalities enjoy visa-free entry for short stays
- Others may require a visa in advance or a visa on arrival
- All travellers must complete the Mauritius All-in-One Digital Travel Form before departure
- This form generates a PDF with a QR code that must be presented on arrival
- Travellers who fail to complete the form must fill out a paper landing card at the airport, adding time to the entry process
ETA Expected to Streamline Travel Experience
The introduction of the ETA aims to eliminate these manual processes, making travel to Mauritius faster, smoother, and more accessible.
As Mauritius continues to enhance its tourism infrastructure, the ETA is expected to become a central upgrade in delivering a seamless digital travel experience for millions of visitors each year.
