Meta Launches WhatsApp Monetisation Features Globally: Channel Subscriptions, Promoted Channels & Status Ads

Meta Introduces New WhatsApp Monetisation Features for Global Rollout

Meta has officially unveiled a new suite of monetization tools for WhatsApp, targeting creators, brands, and organizations seeking to expand their reach and generate revenue through the platform. These features, Channel Subscriptions, Promoted Channels, and Ads in Status, will be integrated into the Updates tab, marking Meta’s most significant monetization move on WhatsApp to date.

Three Key WhatsApp Features to Drive Monetisation

In a statement released on Monday, Meta revealed that the Updates tab, which includes Status and Channels, will be central to this monetization strategy. With over 1.5 billion users interacting with Updates daily, the company sees strong potential for businesses and content creators.

1. Channel Subscriptions

WhatsApp users will now be able to subscribe to their favorite channels, including creators, news platforms, and sports teams, for a monthly fee. This feature enables direct monetization by offering exclusive updates and premium content to paying subscribers.

2. Promoted Channels

With Promoted Channels, WhatsApp will begin suggesting new channels to users based on interests and activity. This gives creators and businesses a paid visibility tool to grow their audience, similar to promoted content on Facebook and Instagram.

3. Ads in Status

Businesses can now place targeted advertisements within WhatsApp Status, functioning much like Instagram Stories ads. These ads will allow users to interact directly with advertisers, enhancing product discoverability and encouraging engagement through messaging.

“We believe the Updates tab is the right place to build a business on WhatsApp in a way that doesn’t interrupt personal chats,” Meta explained.

User Privacy Remains a Core Priority

Meta emphasised that despite the addition of ads and subscription models, WhatsApp’s core value of privacy remains unchanged.

  • End-to-End Encryption: All personal messages, calls, and group chats remain secure.
  • No Phone Number Sharing: WhatsApp will not share or sell users’ phone numbers to advertisers.
  • Minimal Data Use: Ads will only use limited metadata, such as city, country, language, channel interactions, and optional Accounts Centre data.

“Your personal messages, calls, and groups remain end-to-end encrypted. We’ll never sell or share your phone number with advertisers,” Meta assured users.

Gradual Rollout and Business Access

Meta confirmed that the new WhatsApp monetisation features will be rolled out globally in the coming months. Businesses and creators interested in early access or more information can explore WhatsApp Business resources for onboarding support.

Why This Update Matters

This move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to diversify revenue streams across its platforms while providing tools for creators and businesses to thrive. WhatsApp, traditionally a messaging-focused app, is now evolving into a full-fledged monetizable platform, without compromising its hallmark privacy features.
