Microsoft Expands AI in Education with New Copilot Tools for Educators and Students
Microsoft has unveiled a suite of new AI-driven tools and integrations designed to transform how teachers teach and students learn. The new capabilities, powered by Microsoft 365 Copilot and GPT-5 technology, aim to streamline educational workflows, personalise learning, and enhance productivity across schools and universities worldwide.
At the core of these innovations are Teach, Study, and Learn, intelligent Copilot features built to support educators and students in creating, managing, and engaging with educational content more effectively.
Teach: Automating Lesson Planning for Educators
The new Teach feature, integrated into Microsoft 365 Copilot, enables teachers to automate lesson preparation, quizzes, rubrics, and content adjustments such as length, difficulty level, and curriculum alignment.
The tool is designed to save time and boost creativity, allowing educators to focus more on teaching and student engagement rather than administrative tasks.
Notably, Teach will be available at no extra cost for eligible education customers, reinforcing Microsoft’s commitment to equitable access and innovation in learning environments.
Study and Learn: Personalised AI Support for Students
To complement educators’ tools, Microsoft introduced Study and Learn, a new AI-powered intelligent agent designed specifically for students. The platform supports adaptive learning experiences, enabling students to engage in personalised practice sessions, concept reviews, and quizzes that adjust based on performance.
Study and Learn will launch in preview in November 2025, marking a major step in Microsoft’s strategy to bring intelligent, student-centred AI into the classroom.
Deep Integration Across Learning Ecosystems
Microsoft is also expanding Copilot Chat, powered by GPT-5, into popular learning and productivity tools. Starting December 2025, Copilot Chat will integrate seamlessly with apps such as Outlook and PowerPoint, as well as leading Learning Management Systems (LMS), including Canvas, Schoology, Brightspace, Blackboard, and Moodle™.
To ensure accessibility, Microsoft will introduce a new academic subscription plan for Microsoft 365 Copilot at USD 18 per user per month (for ages 13+). This plan includes advanced features like agent access, Copilot Tuning for customisation, and enhanced privacy and data controls, aligning with global education standards.
Early Results Show Significant Time Savings
Microsoft’s early pilot programs demonstrate substantial efficiency gains for educators.
- Brisbane Catholic Education teachers reported saving over 9 hours per week using Copilot tools.
- At the University of South Carolina, 84% of users said they saved between one and five hours per week, highlighting tangible benefits in academic productivity.
These findings underline how AI-powered teaching assistants can streamline lesson creation, grading, and communication, allowing educators to dedicate more time to student interaction and innovation.
