MTN is making strides to improve internet access in Africa’s underserved and remote regions through a partnership with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite providers. These satellites, which operate closer to Earth than traditional ones, promise faster internet speeds and lower latency, offering a practical solution for communities with limited or no broadband connectivity.
The initiative aligns with MTN’s strategy to expand its network coverage while addressing Africa’s digital divide. Pilot projects are already underway, and South Africa’s Independent Communication Authority is developing regulations to support the rollout of LEO satellite services, ensuring fair access for local operators.
This move comes as MTN navigates financial pressures, including declining revenues in key markets like Nigeria. Following its recent 5.5G trials—the first on the continent—the telecom giant is doubling down on innovation to strengthen its position and boost growth.
If successful, the LEO satellite project could not only solidify MTN’s role as a leader in digital connectivity across Africa but also provide a sustainable boost to its bottom line.
