Nigeria Launches “Fibre 2 Hostel” Initiative to Bridge Digital Divide in Universities
In a bold step to enhance digital inclusion and transform higher education, the Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the pilot phase of the “Fibre 2 Hostel” Initiative at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka. The program aims to deliver high-speed fiber-optic internet connectivity directly to student hostels, empowering students with access to essential digital tools for education and collaboration.
A New Era of Digital Learning in Nigerian Universities
Unveiled by Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the initiative provides each participating hostel with:
- Fibre-optic broadband connectivity
- Secure, high-speed Wi-Fi access
- Real-time internet performance monitoring tools
Dr. Tijani emphasized that the project is part of the federal government’s broader effort to bridge the connectivity gap in educational institutions and foster digital innovation, especially among Nigeria’s youth.
“We are committed to transforming how students learn, connect, and innovate by ensuring they have access to reliable internet infrastructure,” said Dr. Tijani.
UNILAG Welcomes Digital Transformation
Professor Folasade Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, praised the initiative, calling it a strategic investment in Nigeria’s academic future. She affirmed that it aligns with UNILAG’s goal to fully digitize the campus environment, enhancing teaching and learning experiences.
“This initiative directly supports our mission to create a modern, tech-enabled academic environment,” she noted.
Pilot Rollout and Expansion Plans
The pilot phase will begin in four key student hostels at UNILAG:
- Femi Gbajabiamila Hostel
- Elkanemi Hostel
- Honours Hostel
- Erastus Akingbola Hostel
The project is implemented in partnership with private broadband providers and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The plan includes future expansion to all student hostels within UNILAG and eventually to universities across Nigeria.
Bridging the Digital Divide in Education
With growing reliance on online resources, virtual collaboration, and remote learning platforms, the “Fibre 2 Hostel” initiative is a timely response to Nigeria’s digital education challenges. It reinforces the government’s vision of using digital technology to drive inclusive growth and position Nigeria as a hub for innovation.
