Nigeria Should Lead the AI Revolution, Not Just Prepare for It – Chibuike Augene

Chibuike Augene, the first indigenous artificial intelligence (AI) developer in Nigeria and CEO of Buildup Technology, has emphasized the transformative role AI can play in revolutionizing critical sectors and expanding access to education in the country.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Newsnight, Augene outlined how AI is redefining the global landscape and urged Nigeria and Africa at large not to be left behind.

“For the first time, we have an intelligent companion that can reason, think, and make judgements. This might be the greatest invention we have in human history,” he said. “AI is revolutionizing every industry. The human race as we know it has changed. Nigeria should not just prepare for the AI era—Nigeria should lead.”

AI IN EDUCATION:EMPOWERING YOUTHS AND BREAKING BARRIERS

Augene noted that artificial intelligence can be instrumental in eliminating barriers that prevent young people from accessing quality education. He emphasized that AI should be viewed as a tool for problem-solving and value creation, rather than a threat to traditional learning systems.

When asked if AI would make students lazy, Augene challenged the conventional definition of education:

“If education is just about getting a certificate, then yes, access to information might seem like a threat. But if it’s about acquiring knowledge to solve problems, then AI becomes an empowering tool.”

EMPOWERING TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WITH AI

He explained that AI can assist teachers in identifying students’ unique learning challenges and tailor support accordingly. Furthermore, he highlighted AI’s potential in helping students with disabilities through customized learning solutions and assistive technologies.

BUILDUP TECHNOLGY- IT’S MISSION

Augene’s startup, Buildup Technology, is taking tangible steps to integrate AI into Nigeria’s education system. The company plans to invest in schools across the country, providing essential resources like laptops and internet access to bridge the digital divide.

“We are committed to building capacity from the ground up. Our goal is to ensure that every child has access to modern tools and resources to thrive in an AI-powered world,” he stated.

A CALL TO ACTION FOR THE GOVERNMENT

Augene concluded by urging the Nigerian government to actively embrace and invest in AI technologies, not just in the tech sector but across all levels of governance and public service.

“It’s an exciting time to be alive. AI is here, and it’s already changing the world. Nigeria must not wait—we must lead,” he emphasised.
