The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been at the center of some of these challenges. Policies limiting international transactions using naira cards and an outright ban on cryptocurrency transactions have made it increasingly difficult for tech entrepreneurs to access the tools they need to innovate. For many, the path to sourcing foreign exchange for business essentials has become prohibitively steep.
The Cryptocurrency Conundrum
Cryptocurrency had become a lifeline for many young Nigerians, offering an alternative avenue to earn and transact in a dollarized economy. However, the CBN’s ban on crypto transactions in 2021 disrupted this ecosystem, forcing banks to close accounts linked to crypto trading. For years, tech-savvy individuals carrying laptops or gadgets have been profiled as fraudsters by the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The tech community’s #StopRobbingUs campaign in 2019 highlighted these injustices, but the scars of those encounters remain.
Elijah Bello, founder of Learnpod, an online tech entrepreneurship academy, notes, “For a country with such a youthful population, our leaders seem disconnected from the future we’re trying to build. The mindset within the corridors of power is outdated, and it’s choking the tech space.”

The generational gap between Nigeria’s policymakers and its tech-savvy youth is glaring. Policies that should foster innovation and growth often end up stifling creativity.
