Nokia and Blackned Partner to Build Next-Gen Tactical Networks for German Military

Nokia and Blackned to Develop Advanced Tactical Networks for German Armed Forces

In a significant step toward modernising military communication infrastructure, Finland-based Nokia and Blackned GmbH, a defence technology firm majority-owned by Rheinmetall, have announced a partnership to develop next-generation tactical networks for the German military.

The collaboration will integrate Nokia’s secure 5G technology and Blackned’s specialised defence software to create robust battlefield communication systems designed to meet the unique operational demands of Germany’s armed forces.

Advanced Tactical Networks for Modern Warfare

The new systems will be tailored specifically for Germany’s defence requirements, with flexibility for future adaptation to international defence markets, Nokia said in a statement on Wednesday. These tactical mobile communication networks are built to ensure secure, real-time data sharing and coordination between military units, even in adverse battlefield conditions where traditional infrastructure is unavailable or compromised. The systems will be integrated with Rheinmetall’s Battlesuite digital platform, offering enhanced situational awareness, mission planning, and operational control capabilities.

Supporting Europe’s Rising Defense Investments

The deal comes at a time of rising military spending across Europe, driven by geopolitical tensions and a renewed focus on national defence capabilities. Nokia, traditionally known for telecom equipment, is increasingly expanding into defence communications, aligning its 5G and software expertise with military needs.

“By joining forces with Blackned, we are delivering a cutting-edge solution that combines 5G security, flexibility, and performance, essential for modern tactical operations,” Nokia stated.

Blackned and Rheinmetall’s Defense Focus

Blackned, known for its secure, mission-critical communication solutions, is expected to leverage its defence-grade software integration skills while benefiting from Rheinmetall’s strategic support and battlefield technology portfolio.

Though financial terms of the partnership have not been disclosed, the venture highlights a growing trend of private-sector collaboration with defence ministries to address evolving digital warfare requirements.
