The move signals OpenAI’s growing ambition to reduce reliance on Nvidia and secure a more cost-efficient, scalable infrastructure for its AI systems.

OpenAI’s Chip Development Strategy

The chip, designed specifically to power OpenAI’s AI models, including ChatGPT, will reportedly be used internally rather than sold to external customers. Sources say the design is nearly finalised, with fabrication expected to take place at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

By developing its own silicon, OpenAI joins other tech giants such as Google, Amazon, and Meta, all of which have built custom AI chips to meet increasing demand for compute power in machine learning and generative AI applications.
