OpenAI to Open Seoul Office Amid Surging ChatGPT Demand in South Korea

OpenAI Staff Plan $6 Billion Share Sale to SoftBank and Other Investors

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced on Monday that it will establish its first office in Seoul, reflecting the rapidly growing demand for its AI services in South Korea. The move marks a significant step in OpenAI’s global expansion strategy, as South Korea becomes one of its key international markets.

South Korea: Second-Largest ChatGPT Subscriber Base Globally

According to OpenAI, South Korea ranks just behind the United States in the number of paying ChatGPT subscribers, highlighting the country’s early adoption and enthusiasm for artificial intelligence tools. To better serve this growing user base, OpenAI has officially established a local entity and begun hiring talent in South Korea. The new office will support OpenAI’s local partnerships, product localisation efforts, and future business initiatives in the region.

“Korea’s full-stack AI ecosystem makes it one of the most promising markets in the world for meaningful AI impact, from silicon to software and students to seniors,” said Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI.

Strategic Collaboration with Kakao and Political Engagement

Earlier this year, OpenAI announced a collaboration with Kakao, one of South Korea’s largest internet companies and the operator of the popular KakaoTalk chat app. The partnership focuses on developing AI-powered services tailored to the Korean market.

During his visit to Seoul, Jason Kwon is also expected to meet with officials from South Korea’s main political parties, the ruling People Power Party and the opposition Democratic Party, to explore opportunities and discuss AI policy frameworks and technological cooperation.

OpenAI Expands International Footprint in Key AI Markets

The opening of the Seoul office reflects OpenAI’s commitment to expanding its presence in regions where AI adoption is accelerating. South Korea’s advanced tech infrastructure, strong semiconductor industry, and highly connected population make it an ideal hub for AI innovation and deployment. Further announcements regarding OpenAI’s Korea strategy, partnerships, and local initiatives are expected in the coming months.

Seoul Office Marks Major Milestone in OpenAI’s Global Growth

OpenAI’s decision to open its first Asia-based office in Seoul signifies not only the importance of the South Korean market but also the company’s dedication to collaborating with local businesses, governments, and developers. As ChatGPT continues to gain popularity globally, South Korea is poised to play a central role in shaping its future.
