Russia is set to integrate its domestically developed Gigachat AI model into the International Space Station (ISS), marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to advance artificial intelligence in space exploration. The announcement was made by Roscosmos chief Dmitry Bakanov during a technology conference in Moscow on Tuesday.
Gigachat: Russia’s Answer to the AI Race
Gigachat, created by Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank, is one of the nation’s two flagship large language models (LLMs). As the global AI arms race intensifies, Russia is seeking to match the capabilities of the United States and China in developing cutting-edge AI technologies.
The upcoming Roscosmos mission to the ISS, scheduled for November 27, will deliver all necessary hardware and software to enable Gigachat to function onboard the space station.
How Gigachat Will Support Cosmonauts
Once integrated, Gigachat AI will play a critical role in processing satellite imagery, helping improve image resolution from 1 meter per pixel to 0.5 meters. Bakanov described the model as offering “direct assistance for the cosmonauts,” enhancing their ability to analyse data in real time.
This functionality is expected to increase operational efficiency and accuracy for tasks involving Earth observation and space-based monitoring.
AI in Orbit: Russia’s Future in Space and Technology
Earlier this year, in April, a Russian spacecraft delivered American astronaut Jonathan Kim and Russian astronauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Alexei Zubritsky to the ISS. The next mission, which will carry the Gigachat system, continues Russia’s involvement in the ISS program, which it has committed to supporting through 2028. Looking ahead, Russia plans to launch the first two modules of its new national space station in 2027, further showcasing its ambition in space exploration.

Sberbank, the developer of Gigachat, is heavily investing in AI agent technology, a goal-directed generative AI system that can analyse data, make autonomous decisions, and execute tasks without ongoing human input. These advancements could pave the way for more autonomous and intelligent space missions in the future.
