Starlink Issues Urgent Device Update Warning to Prevent Internet Outage

SpaceX’s Starlink has released an urgent advisory to select users, instructing them to update their Starlink equipment by November 17, 2025. The update is aimed at improving security, performance, and system reliability. According to the company, customers who fail to perform the required update may experience internet service disruptions or even irreversible device failure.

Which Starlink Customers Are Affected

The update notice affects two specific user groups, according to Starlink:

  1. Hardware Update Group: Customers who received the message Action Required: Plug in for critical update”. These users must connect their Starlink terminal to power before November 17 to automatically complete the update. Devices that remain disconnected after the deadline will become permanently unusable.
  2. Software Update Group: Customers who got the alert Action Required: Update Software.” They must manually install the latest update via the Starlink app. Starting November 18, any device left unupdated will lose internet connectivity until the update is applied.

Starlink clarified that only users who received official emails or in-app notifications need to take action. Each alert includes a unique Starlink ID (UTID) linked to the customer’s terminal.

Step-by-Step Guide for the Update

For the critical hardware update:

  • Set up your Starlink terminal outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
  • Plug in the terminal to initiate the automatic update.
  • Allow 15–30 minutes for the process to complete.

For the software update:

  • Connect to your Starlink Wi-Fi network.
  • Open the Starlink app and follow the on-screen steps.
  • The software update typically installs in under one minute.

Starlink assured users that no fees apply for leaving their terminals plugged in during the update, and active subscriptions are not required to perform it.

Versions Impacted by the Update

The urgency of the update depends on the customer’s software version:

  • Versions earlier than 2024.05.0: Must be updated by November 17, 2025, or devices will become permanently disabled.
  • Versions 2024.05.0 to 2024.12.26: Must be manually updated via the app before the deadline to maintain internet access.
  • Versions newer than 2024.12.26: No immediate action required.

Starlink explained that the update is necessary to maintain compatibility with upcoming system upgrades, boost network efficiency, and strengthen cybersecurity measures. It also ensures that users continue to benefit from faster speeds and improved reliability as the Starlink constellation expands globally.
