T2 Partners With Huawei for Network Modernisation
T2, the telecom operator formerly known as 9mobile, has signed a multi-million-dollar strategic partnership with Huawei to overhaul its core network infrastructure across Nigeria.
The agreement, announced at a signing ceremony in Lagos, marks a major step in T2’s revival strategy as it seeks to reclaim its place in the highly competitive Nigerian telecom market.
Although the financial details were not disclosed, T2 confirmed it is a multi-million-dollar deal aimed at improving network capacity, resilience, and security.
Part of T2’s Four-Phase Roadmap
According to the company, the project aligns with its four-phase strategic roadmap:
- Stabilisation
- Modernisation
- Transformation
- Growth
The roadmap is designed to restore T2’s competitiveness, rebuild consumer trust, and position the company for long-term growth in Nigeria’s digital economy.
More Than Just a Technical Upgrade
Obafemi Banigbe, CEO of T2, described the deal as a catalyst for the company’s revival rather than a simple technical upgrade.
“Huawei has been a trusted partner throughout our journey, and this next chapter reaffirms our shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and excellence. With Huawei by our side, we’re not just upgrading our network, we’re future-proofing it,” Banigbe said.
Executives present at the ceremony included:
- John Vasikaran – Chief Operating Officer
- Ayodeji Adedeji – Chief Technical & Information Officer
- Ifeloju Alakija – Vice President, Corporate Service
- Seni Ogunkola – Vice President, Brands & Communication
On Huawei’s side, Jiang Junyong, CEO of Huawei Nigeria Carrier Business, emphasised that the partnership will help T2 build a resilient, high-performance core network capable of supporting next-generation telecom services.
Industry Impact and Market Repositioning
The modernisation project represents the start of T2’s multi-phase investment strategy, which comes alongside its recent rebrand after years of turbulence.
Industry analysts believe the move could:
- Expand nationwide coverage
- Improve service quality and reliability
- Support the rollout of next-gen digital services
- Rebuild consumer confidence in the T2 brand
With Nigerian consumers demanding faster and more reliable digital connectivity, this partnership could position T2 as a strong challenger to MTN, Airtel, and Globacom.
T2 Records First Subscriber Growth in a Year
In July, T2 recorded its first monthly subscriber gain in nearly a year, adding 290,601 new subscribers, according to Nairametrics.
Notably, T2 was the only mobile network operator (MNO) in Nigeria to post subscriber growth that month, while MTN, Airtel, and Globacom all reported declines.
This growth came on the back of its infrastructure-sharing agreement with MTN, signalling that T2’s recovery strategy is beginning to yield results.
