The Tim Akano Foundation (TAF) has awarded digital skills scholarships to 122 students from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and various communities in Osun State, furthering its mission to promote education, youth empowerment, and community development.
The scholarships were distributed in June 2025 to deserving undergraduates from the communities of Oluponna, Iwo, Ile Ogbo, Kuta, and Telemu. Among the recipients were 22 first-class and second-class upper students, reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to rewarding academic excellence.
Tim Akano Honours His Roots with Scholarships and Community Projects
Tim Akano, CEO of New Horizons Technologies and founder of TAF, emphasised that his deep investment in education stems from a personal story of community support. The scholarship presentation took place at Aipate Baptist Church, Iwo, a symbolic location tied to Akano’s formative years.
“That school gave me access to quality secondary education. If not for that collective sacrifice, I would have ended up as a trader, a hunter or a tailor. Indeed, I am a product of God and people’s generosity,” Akano stated, recalling the community contributions in 1976 that built Oluponna Community High School, where he studied.
Federation of Ayedire Student Union Recognises Akano’s Impact
In recognition of his dedication to community upliftment, the Federation of Ayedire Student Union presented Akano with an Award of Excellence as a Community Role Model. The federation comprises students from surrounding communities including Oluponna, Iwo, Ile Ogbo, Kuta, and Telemu.
Ongoing Support for Primary Education and School Infrastructure
In 2024, TAF adopted Baptist Day School, Oluponna, Akano’s alma mater, providing:
- Two sets of uniforms, each to over 300 students
- Exercise books
- Boreholes for clean water
- Toilets and perimeter fencing
The Foundation has pledged lifelong support to the school and its students.
Salary Donated to Build JAMB CBT Centre
Continuing his philanthropic efforts, Akano donated his full May 2025 salary to charity, funding multiple community projects. Among them is the construction of a JAMB CBT (Computer-Based Testing) Centre at Aipate Baptist Church.
This initiative addresses a pressing challenge for local students, who often travel long and unsafe distances to take JAMB exams in cities like Ibadan. “Our goal is to eliminate this barrier by providing access to modern testing facilities within the community,” Akano noted.
