Threads Introduces Messaging and Highlighter Feature to Boost User Engagement

Threads Adds Messaging and Highlighter Features to Strengthen Conversations and Community

As Meta’s Threads app celebrates its second anniversary, the company has announced two major feature updates aimed at enhancing user interaction and building stronger communities on the platform.

The two new features are:

  • Direct Messaging (DMs) within the Threads app
  • A new Threads Highlighter that visually emphasises impactful conversations and trending topics

These updates reinforce Meta’s commitment to making Threads a vibrant destination for open dialogue, fresh perspectives, and genuine community engagement.

1. Direct Messaging Now Available on Threads

One of the most requested features by users, direct messaging (DMs), is now available in Threads. This new feature enables users to take public conversations private, fostering deeper, more personal connections within the app.

Key highlights of the new messaging feature:

  • DMs are currently limited to mutual followers (either on Threads or Instagram) and are only available for users aged 18 and above.
  • Built with Meta’s robust privacy and safety infrastructure, messaging aims to create a secure, positive space for one-on-one conversations.
  • Future updates will include:
    • Message controls: Choose who can send you messages
    • Message requests folder: Manage and screen incoming chats
    • Group messaging: Chat with multiple users in one thread
    • Inbox filters: Easily navigate your messages

These enhancements will help users strengthen existing connections and build new ones on Threads without leaving the app.

2. Introducing the Threads Highlighter: Spotlighting Meaningful Conversations

The newly launched Threads Highlighter is a visual feature designed to elevate standout content, highlight trending topics, and surface unique perspectives that encourage thoughtful discussions.

Where you’ll see the Highlighter:

  • On trending topics
  • In the discovery areas of the app
  • Across future placements where fresh voices are being elevated

This update aims to give creators and communities greater visibility, support authentic engagement, and spotlight content that adds depth to public conversations.

Threads Continues to Grow as a Standalone Social Platform

Meta reports that more than one-third of daily Threads users follow different accounts than they do on Instagram—proof that Threads is developing its own identity and audience.

With its focus on openness, thoughtful dialogue, and safe social experiences, Threads is evolving into a next-generation social media platform distinct from Meta’s other offerings.

As Threads enters its third year, Meta remains focused on:

  • Supporting creators and communities
  • Improving discoverability
  • Encouraging healthy, engaging conversations

A New Chapter for Threads and Its Users

With the introduction of DMs and the Highlighter, Threads is doubling down on its mission to become a central hub for meaningful interactions. These tools are set to enhance content discovery, promote safety, and deepen social connections, making Threads a go-to platform for people who value real conversations and unique perspectives.
