Upskill Universe, HP, and Google Launch "Skills for Business" to Empower 10,000 African SMEs

New Digital Skills Initiative Targets 10,000 African SMEs

Upskill Universe, in partnership with HP and Google, has launched a groundbreaking digital education initiative titled “Skills for Business”, designed to empower 10,000 Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria and South Africa.

The program aims to deliver hands-on training in Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital marketing, and e-commerce, helping entrepreneurs and small business owners compete more effectively in the digital economy.

What Is the “Skills for Business” Program?

Announced in early July 2025, the Skills for Business” initiative offers free digital skills training tailored to the unique challenges faced by African SMEs. The core focus areas include:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) for business growth
  • Digital marketing techniques to reach wider audiences
  • E-commerce strategies for scaling online operations

The program is designed for practical impact, equipping participants with tools they can immediately apply to improve productivity, visibility, and profitability.

 A Focus on Women-Led Businesses

To promote inclusivity and economic equity, at least 50% of the program’s spots are reserved for women-led SMEs. This focus aligns with global efforts to increase women’s participation in the digital economy and help close gender gaps in entrepreneurship and technology.

Why This Matters for African SMEs

Africa’s SME sector represents a major driver of economic development and job creation. However, digital skills gaps remain a barrier to growth. This program directly addresses those challenges by:

  •  Bridging the digital divide
  • Empowering women entrepreneurs
  • Stimulating local job creation and innovation
  • Boosting the global competitiveness of African SMEs

“This partnership with HP and Google is a transformative step toward building a digitally resilient and economically vibrant future for African entrepreneurs,” said a spokesperson from UpSkill Universe.
