Namibia and Botswana Strengthen ICT Cooperation Through Bilateral Talks in Swakopmund
The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has announced a major advancement in regional ICT collaboration between Namibia and Botswana following a bilateral working visit held in Swakopmund on October 11. The meeting was led by Namibia’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, and Botswana’s Minister of Communications, Knowledge and Technology, Hon. David Tshere, marking a pivotal step in reinforcing digital cooperation between the two nations.
The discussions focused on enhancing digital infrastructure, cross-border connectivity, and regional innovation, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to fostering stronger ICT-driven economic integration across Southern Africa.
Focus on Infrastructure and Regional Connectivity
As part of the bilateral engagement, the delegation toured the West Africa Submarine Cable System (WACS) landing site in Swakopmund — a critical component of Namibia’s international internet infrastructure. The facility plays a key role in ensuring reliable global connectivity, supporting digital transformation, and strengthening communication networks within the region.
The tour emphasised the strategic importance of shared ICT infrastructure in driving digital inclusion, improving broadband access, and creating a more connected Southern African region.
Joint Commitment to Digital Transformation
High-level representatives from Telecom Namibia, MTC Namibia, BOCRA (Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority), and CRAN participated in the working sessions. Discussions centred on identifying areas of joint investment, regulatory harmonisation, and the exchange of digital expertise to accelerate innovation and bridge connectivity gaps.
Both countries highlighted their shared vision of promoting digital empowerment, innovation ecosystems, and sustainable ICT growth that benefits citizens and businesses alike.
Driving Regional Innovation and Socio-Economic Development
Through this renewed collaboration, Namibia and Botswana aim to create a more integrated digital economy, fostering opportunities in education, e-government, trade, and technology entrepreneurship. The bilateral talks reflect the growing recognition that ICT cooperation is central to regional development, competitiveness, and resilience in an increasingly digital world.
The Swakopmund meeting reinforces both nations’ dedication to leveraging technology as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation, positioning Southern Africa as a hub for connectivity, innovation, and sustainable growth.
