Ghana Inaugurates New NCA Board to Drive Digital Transformation and 5G Readiness

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations of Ghana has inaugurated a new governing board for the National Communications Authority (NCA), marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey and its preparation for 5G technology.

The ceremony, held in Accra, was led by Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), who emphasised the board’s crucial role in restoring Ghana’s leadership position in Africa’s rapidly evolving telecommunications sector.

Mrs Mavis Araba Ampah Becomes NCA’s First Female Chairperson

The newly constituted board is chaired by Mrs Mavis Araba Ampah, the first woman to ever hold the position in the Authority’s history. She leads a distinguished team of nine professionals drawn from communications, technology, academia, and public administration.

The board members include:

  • Rev. Ing. Edmund Y. Fianko (Acting Director-General of the NCA)
  • Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu
  • Dr. George Atta-Boateng
  • Mr. George Sarpong
  • Dr. Augustina Odame
  • Dr. Mahama Seth Sayibu
  • Dr. Selaise Agyinasare
  • Madam Barbara Serwaa Asamoah

Their collective expertise is expected to strengthen the NCA’s regulatory effectiveness, promote innovation in telecom governance, and ensure the sustainable growth of Ghana’s digital ecosystem.

Strengthening Telecom Regulation and 5G Preparedness

The inauguration comes at a critical time as Ghana finalises a new Electronic Communications Act, which will redefine the nation’s digital and regulatory landscape.

The new NCA board is tasked with guiding Ghana’s 5G readiness, improving spectrum management, and ensuring high-quality telecommunications services across the country. Hon. Samuel Nartey George emphasised the importance of enhancing internet speed, reliability, and affordability to make digital services more impactful for citizens and businesses.

He noted that the NCA must strike a balance between strategic governance and administrative independence, entrusting operational leadership to the Director-General and his team for effective implementation.

Aligning with Ghana’s Digital Economy Vision

The establishment of the new board completes the Ministry’s leadership structure across its agencies, nine months into the new administration, and reinforces the government’s commitment to consolidating Ghana’s digital economy and innovation ecosystem.

Looking ahead, Hon. George announced plans to celebrate the NCA’s 30th anniversary in 2026 through international conferences in partnership with the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). These events will further position Ghana as a regional hub for digital policy dialogue and regulatory excellence.

A Commitment to Integrity, Innovation, and Collaboration

In her remarks, Chairperson Mrs Mavis Ampah pledged that the new board will operate with integrity, innovation, and collaboration at the core of its mission. She highlighted the board’s priorities, which include:

  • Efficient spectrum management
  • Enhanced consumer protection
  • Smooth transition to 5G and emerging technologies

Mrs. Ampah reaffirmed that the board’s goal is to ensure Ghana remains at the forefront of Africa’s digital advancement, driving innovation and inclusive connectivity for all.

Ghana’s Digital Future

With the inauguration of the new NCA board, Ghana is reinforcing its commitment to digital transformation and technological leadership. By focusing on policy modernisation, infrastructure development, and future-ready governance, the country is well-positioned to become a regional powerhouse in telecom innovation and digital inclusion.
