Edo State Introduces 668# USSD Code for Easy Tax ID Registration Ahead of 2026 Nigerian Tax Acts Rollout

The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has launched a new USSD code to streamline tax compliance and simplify Tax Identification Number (TIN) registration for residents. The initiative comes as part of the state’s preparations for the nationwide enforcement of the new Nigerian Tax Acts beginning January 1, 2026.

USSD Code to Boost Inclusivity and Compliance

Speaking on the development, Courage Eboigbe, Head of Corporate Communications at EIRS, said the initiative is designed to promote inclusivity and ensure residents comply with tax filing requirements ahead of 2026. He noted that the system will expand participation in the formal economy and improve the ease of doing business across the state.

The rollout is a collaboration between the Edo State Internal Revenue Service and the Joint Tax Board (JTB).

*How the 668# USSD Code Works

By dialling *668# on any mobile device, Edo residents can instantly register for a Tax ID at a service fee of ₦20.
Additional features available via the code include:

  • Tax ID verification
  • Tax certificate generation

Checks indicate that the USSD code is accessible nationwide, meaning all Nigerians—regardless of their state of residence—can make use of the service.

FIRS Launched a Similar USSD Code in 2024

This move follows a similar initiative by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which introduced the *829# USSD code last year.
That code, at ₦100, allows taxpayers to:

  • Retrieve their Tax ID
  • Verify Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC)
  • Access tax types and rates
  • Make tax-related inquiries
  • Locate the nearest FIRS office

With this technology, Nigeria became one of only six African countries offering USSD-enabled tax services.

14 New Tax ID Registration Centres Launched in Edo State

To complement the new digital service, EIRS has opened 14 additional Tax ID registration centres across Edo State, aimed at decentralising access and bringing tax services closer to citizens.

The new centres are located in zonal tax offices across:

  • Oredo
  • Egor
  • Ikpoba-Okha
  • Uhunmwonde
  • Ovia North-East
  • Orhionmwon
  • Ovia South-West
  • Esan West
  • Esan North-East
  • Akoko-Edo
  • Etsako East
  • Etsako West
  • Owan East

Strategic Move Ahead of 2026 Tax Law Enforcement

Eboigbe emphasised that the rollout is a strategic step to support taxpayer compliance before the implementation of the new national tax laws. “These initiatives ensure that citizens and potential taxpayers, especially those in rural and diaspora communities, can obtain their Tax ID conveniently,” he said.

In addition to the USSD channel and physical centres, Nigerians can also confirm existing TINs or complete new registrations via the JTB portal: tin.jtb.gov.ng.
