Ghana Partners with Cisco to Launch One Million Coders Certification Initiative

Ghana’s Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Cisco Systems to accelerate the government’s One Million Coders Programme, an ambitious initiative designed to equip citizens with globally recognised digital skills and certifications.

The partnership underscores Ghana’s growing commitment to building a digitally skilled and innovation-driven workforce, aligning with the country’s long-term digital transformation agenda.

A Vision for a Future-Ready Ghana

The collaboration was confirmed during a high-level meeting between Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, and Imoh Akpan, Cisco’s Business Development Manager for Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana.

Under the agreement, Cisco will provide certification pathways, digital learning platforms, and professional training resources to Ghanaians participating in the One Million Coders Programme. The initiative will focus on emerging tech domains, including:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Cybersecurity
  • Data Forensics
  • Cloud Computing

This strategic collaboration supports Ghana’s goal of cultivating a digitally empowered workforce capable of driving innovation, competitiveness, and sustainable growth in the digital era.

Empowering Communities Through Digital Hubs

To ensure inclusive access, the Ministry announced plans to establish digital hubs in all 276 constituencies across Ghana. Each hub will be equipped with around 50 computers, providing access to:

  • Internet connectivity
  • Coding and digital skills training
  • Mentorship and learning resources

These hubs aim to bridge the urban-rural digital divide, empowering youth, especially in underserved areas — to participate fully in Ghana’s expanding digital economy.

Collaboration with Global Tech Giants

The partnership with Cisco forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to collaborate with leading global technology companies, including Google, Huawei, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Through these alliances, the government seeks to create a unified ecosystem for digital learning and certification, ensuring that Ghanaian professionals are equipped to compete on the global stage.

Next Steps and Implementation

Following the initial engagement, the Ministry has invited Cisco to submit a formal proposal and expression of interest to solidify the partnership framework. Deputy Minister Hon. Adams Mohammed Sukparu and other senior officials from the Ministry participated in discussions on implementation strategies and the integration of certification programs into the national digital skills agenda.

The collaboration is expected to enhance Ghana’s position as a continental leader in digital skills development, creating employment opportunities and fostering innovation across sectors.

Driving Ghana’s Digital Transformation

The One Million Coders Programme is a cornerstone of Ghana’s digital transformation plan, which envisions an AI-enabled government and the widespread integration of digital technology into governance, education, and economic development.

By aligning with global partners like Cisco, Ghana is taking decisive steps toward a future-ready, inclusive digital economy where technology empowers every citizen, regardless of location or background.
