Nigeria has secured a major military cooperation deal with Türkiye, focusing on training, technology transfer, and defence capacity development, following high-level engagements at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2026.

The agreement was reached during bilateral talks led by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, alongside senior military and diplomatic officials from both countries.

Discussions centred on strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture through targeted training programmes, advanced military technology, and operational support.

A key highlight of the partnership is a comprehensive training initiative for Nigerian armed forces personnel. Türkiye committed to providing specialised instruction in areas such as counterterrorism, special forces operations, intelligence integration, and counter-drone warfare.

As part of the immediate steps, Nigerian personnel will be deployed to Türkiye for training, while both nations have agreed to establish a military training facility in Nigeria under a phased implementation plan that includes land provision.

Beyond training, the deal outlines expanded collaboration in defence technology and industry. Both countries will explore joint production, maintenance training, and technology transfer arrangements aimed at boosting Nigeria’s local defence capabilities.

Türkiye also pledged support in the provision of advanced surveillance systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and other specialised military equipment tailored to Nigeria’s security challenges.

The partnership further covers intelligence sharing and integrated systems for border and internal security, as well as technical support for disarmament and rehabilitation programmes.

In the air domain, discussions included improved maintenance frameworks, specialised aviation training, and the potential acquisition of helicopters and unmanned platforms to enhance Nigeria’s air power.

Naval cooperation is also set to deepen, with Nigerian naval officials expected to engage Turkish counterparts on maritime training and platform assessment.

Describing the outcome as a significant milestone, Musa said the collaboration would immediately translate into training deployments and technical exchanges, marking a new phase in Nigeria’s defence modernisation efforts.
