Taraba State Begins Digital Filing of Criminal Cases
Taraba State has officially launched an electronic criminal case filing portal under the Nigerian Case Management System (NCMS), marking the start of digital filing of criminal matters in the state’s High Courts.
The launch, announced on Monday, represents a major step in the state’s judicial reform efforts aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and access to justice through technology.
Governor Describes Initiative as Historic Milestone
Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, who was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Timothy Kataps, described the initiative as a historic milestone for the state.
According to the governor, the launch demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, deepening the rule of law, and promoting effective governance.
“I commend the Taraba State Judiciary, which has taken a major step toward digital transformation with the official launch of NCMS and the e-Filing Portal. This initiative is aimed at modernising court processes, improving case management, and ensuring faster and more efficient delivery of justice,” Kefas said.
Government Pledges Continued Support for Judicial Reforms
Governor Kefas reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the modernisation of the judiciary, noting that technology remains central to achieving swift, fair, and transparent justice.
He assured that the government would continue to provide the resources, infrastructure, and institutional backing required to sustain ongoing judicial reforms across the state.
How the E-Filing Portal Will Improve Court Processes
Speaking at the event, the Chief Judge of Taraba State, Joel Agya, explained that the portal enables electronic filing of originating processes and subsequent applications in criminal cases.
Justice Agya said the platform would:
- Improve case tracking and monitoring from filing to final judgment
- Reduce delays associated with manual registry procedures
- Enhance the security, integrity, and accessibility of court records
- Promote better docket control and time management by judges
Technology to Support, Not Replace, Judicial Decision-Making
According to the Chief Judge, the NCMS e-filing platform is designed to support judicial decision-making, not replace it. He stressed that the system ensures administrative processes do not become obstacles to timely justice delivery.
By digitising filings and record management, the platform is expected to streamline court operations while preserving the independence and discretion of judicial officers.
Boost for Access to Justice in Taraba State
The introduction of electronic filing places Taraba State among a growing number of Nigerian states leveraging technology to modernise their justice systems.
The initiative is expected to improve access to justice for litigants, lawyers, and prosecutors, while enhancing efficiency and transparency within the state’s criminal justice framework.
