The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has significantly upgraded its operations with the deployment of advanced digital technologies aimed at improving road safety and emergency response across Lagos.
The initiative, part of the state’s broader smart city drive, is already delivering measurable results, with faster response times and improved coordination during road accidents and traffic emergencies.
Faster Response, Smarter Coordination
According to an internal operational review, LASTMA has integrated a suite of cutting-edge tools, including surveillance drones, traffic monitoring cameras, GPS-enabled patrol vehicles, body cameras, and a centralized command-and-control centre.
These systems enable real-time detection and verification of incidents, allowing officials to quickly dispatch the nearest response teams. The result is a significant reduction in delays previously caused by manual reporting and logistical challenges.
Traffic operatives across various units — including rescue teams, surveillance officers, and zonal commanders — are now connected through mobile data terminals and intelligent communication systems. This ensures seamless coordination with emergency services, quicker traffic rerouting, and rapid clearance of accident scenes to prevent secondary crashes.
Predictive Analytics Driving Proactive Traffic Control
Beyond real-time response, LASTMA is leveraging predictive data analytics to anticipate congestion and identify accident-prone areas. By analysing traffic patterns and high-risk corridors, the agency can deploy personnel ahead of peak periods, reducing gridlock and improving overall traffic flow.
This proactive approach is helping to lower accident
