How Artificial Intelligence Can Revolutionize Agriculture in Nigeria – Expert Insight

AI Can Help Boost Farm Yields and Minimize Losses in Nigeria

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionise Nigeria’s agricultural sector by improving crop yields and minimising losses, according to Chioma Okoro, chief operating officer (COO) of Wootlab Innovations. In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Okoro discussed the critical role AI can play in transforming farming practices across the country.

Multimodal AI Offers Smart Farming Solutions

Okoro explained that multimodal AI, which combines multiple data sources, enables farmers to make informed decisions about what to plant, when to plant, how to fertilise, and the best time to harvest. These insights are powered by real-time data, eliminating guesswork and improving overall farm efficiency.

“AI can advise farmers on key decisions using data from soil quality, weather forecasts, satellite imagery, and crop health,” she said.

AI Tools for Precision Agriculture

The tech expert highlighted that tools such as soil yield maps and farm performance analytics are already helping farmers monitor field conditions and plan for higher output. These innovations provide actionable insights that can drive smarter, more sustainable agriculture practices.

Transparency and Innovation Through Digital Farming

Okoro also emphasised that AI is contributing to more transparent and fair agricultural systems, particularly in developed countries where digital farming investments have spurred rapid innovation. By leveraging similar technologies, Nigeria can close the productivity gap in agriculture and enhance food security.

AI for Early Detection and Weather Forecasting

AI systems can also forecast extreme weather events like droughts, rainfall, or strong winds. Additionally, they can detect early signs of crop stress, pest attacks, or water shortages—giving farmers a chance to act swiftly and reduce losses.

Empowering Nigerian Farmers with AI Tools

To fully realise the benefits of AI in agriculture, Okoro stressed the importance of making these tools accessible to local farmers. Ensuring that rural communities have access to AI-driven platforms can significantly boost productivity and help Nigeria meet its growing food demand.

Nigeria Urged to Prioritize AI in Agriculture

Supporting this view, data and AI expert Mr. Abel Aboh previously called on the Nigerian government to prioritise AI in agriculture. He emphasised that AI-driven strategies should be at the forefront of national efforts to achieve food sufficiency. Aboh advocated assembling qualified experts to implement these solutions effectively.

Unlocking Nigeria’s Agricultural Potential with AI

As AI technology continues to evolve, its potential to drive transformational changes in agriculture becomes even more evident. By focusing on trustworthy, transparent, and fair AI systems, Nigeria can unlock significant value across the agricultural value chain, ensuring sustainable growth and food security for its citizens.
