Micron Expands U.S. Investment by $30 Billion Amid Trump’s Onshoring Push

Micron Boosts U.S. Investment to $200 Billion Amid Semiconductor Policy Shift

Micron Technology announced on Thursday that it is increasing its U.S. investment by $30 billion, bringing its total planned U.S. spending to $200 billion. The move comes in response to growing political pressure from President Donald Trump, who has ramped up his onshoring efforts and tariff threats on semiconductor imports to boost domestic manufacturing.

This strategic shift by Micron aligns with broader efforts by the U.S. government to secure semiconductor supply chains, support AI infrastructure, and reduce reliance on foreign chip production.

Micron’s U.S. Investment Highlights:

  • Total U.S. investment commitment: $200 billion
  • The new $30 billion increase will support:
    • Construction of a second memory fab in Boise, Idaho
    • Expansion of the Manassas, Virginia facility
  • $50 billion allocated for research and development (R&D)
  • Micron aims to produce 40% of its DRAM chips domestically

CHIPS Act Funding and Political Tensions

In December 2024, under former President Joe Biden, Micron secured $6.2 billion in federal subsidies from the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, one of the largest allocations granted to a U.S. semiconductor company. The investment supports semiconductor manufacturing in New York and Idaho.

However, President Trump’s administration has signalled a reevaluation of CHIPS Act grants, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stating that many of the agreements are under renegotiation.

Despite threatening to dismantle the CHIPS Act, Trump is pushing for increased domestic semiconductor production, leading companies like Micron to bolster their American manufacturing presence.

Micron, AI Growth, and Nvidia’s Involvement

Micron’s advanced memory chips, including High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), are vital components for the next generation of AI models. DRAM chips manufactured by Micron are also critical for a wide range of industries, from personal computing and cars to wireless networks and industrial systems.

Nvidia, one of Micron’s largest customers, recently announced a $500 billion investment in AI server infrastructure in the U.S., partnering with Micron and TSMC. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised Micron’s expanded investment, stating, “Micron’s investment in advanced memory manufacturing and HBM capabilities in the U.S., with support from the Trump administration, is an important step forward for the AI ecosystem.”

Key Projects and Financial Details

  • Boise, Idaho: Site of the new leading-edge memory fab
  • Manassas, Virginia: Will receive part of a $275 million CHIPS Act award for facility expansion
  • New York: Site of long-term $100 billion manufacturing investment
  • Idaho: Will also benefit from $25 billion in investments announced previously

These developments reinforce Micron’s long-term commitment to domestic semiconductor leadership and provide the infrastructure needed for AI, 5G, and industrial innovation.
