Pope Leo Urges Politicians to Respond to Growing Challenges of Artificial Intelligence
Pope Leo has called on global political leaders to take urgent action in addressing the ethical and societal challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI), particularly its impact on the youth and social inequality. Speaking at a high-profile event attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and delegations from 68 countries, the pontiff emphasised the need for human-centred AI governance.

Pope Leo specifically expressed concern over AI’s impact on younger generations, calling for protection of “healthy, fair, and sound lifestyles.” He also condemned the widening gulf between the rich and the poor, exacerbated by unchecked technological development.
Italian Prime Minister Responds
In response to the pope’s message, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to responsible AI development:
“Italy will continue its efforts, both nationally and internationally, to ensure that the development of AI is governed by humans and has the wellbeing of humans as its ultimate goal,” Meloni said.
She praised the pope’s remarks and pledged to integrate his guidance into Italy’s national and diplomatic efforts on AI governance.

Since taking office, Pope Leo has been vocal about the risks AI poses to employment, journalism, and ethical responsibility.
