MTN South Africa Commits R220 Million to Boost Rural Network in Eastern Cape
In a bold move to enhance network coverage and digital connectivity, MTN South Africa has announced a R220 million investment in the Eastern Cape, aiming to expand its rural network footprint and strengthen infrastructure in underserved communities.
This significant investment is part of MTN’s national rollout strategy under its Ambition 2025 roadmap, which focuses on connecting the unconnected and building inclusive digital platforms across the country.
Rural Network Expansion in the Eastern Cape
According to Songezo Masiso, General Manager of MTN in the Eastern Cape, the R220 million will be channelled into:
- Deployment of new base stations
- Upgrades on over 250 existing sites
- Modernisation of existing infrastructure
- Battery, energy, and site security enhancements
“This investment will improve battery, site security, and energy facilities, including the availability of generators,” said Masiso.
These improvements are expected to boost network capacity, reliability, and speed, ensuring that more rural communities in the province gain access to high-speed digital services.

MTN’s investment targets rural and peri-urban areas in the Eastern Cape. Notable locations set to experience enhanced network quality by year-end include:

- Lusikisiki
- Qumbu
- Duncan
Currently, MTN boasts 98% 4G coverage and 48% 5G coverage in the province. The company’s goal is to increase 5G penetration and ensure reliable coverage in remote areas, fostering digital inclusion for all South Africans.

The Eastern Cape has recently experienced severe weather events, especially in Mthatha, which led to:
- Widespread displacement of residents
- Loss of lives
- Damage to telecom infrastructure
